The terms lead generation, outsourced SDR and Business Development as a Service (BDaaS) often appear in the same buying conversation. They can overlap, so the label alone does not tell you who owns the research, outreach, follow-up or qualification. Start with the work you need done and the output your sales team expects.

Lead generation: ask what a lead means

Lead generation may mean a list of potential accounts or contacts, enquiries collected through a campaign, or responses from an outreach programme. Some providers go further and qualify prospects. Ask what information accompanies each lead, whether the provider has spoken with the person, and who handles the next conversation. A contact record is not automatically a qualified sales opportunity.

Outsourced SDR: ask who manages the work

An outsourced sales development representative can add capacity for prospecting, follow-up and meeting setting. The responsibility for targeting, training, coaching, messaging, CRM hygiene and quality reviews varies between arrangements. Hiring an external representative and buying a fully managed prospecting process are not necessarily the same thing.

BDaaS: ask which outcomes and responsibilities are owned

BDaaS stands for Business Development as a Service. Providers may scope it differently. Vazpio's BDaaS model manages the agreed front end of B2B development: research suitable accounts, identify decision-makers, conduct human-led outreach, follow up, qualify interest and hand over a meeting with context. Depending on the engagement, that work can also include the people, processes, training and reporting needed to run it.

Compare the handoff, not just the activity

When evaluating a proposal, ask who chooses the target accounts, who checks contact data, who runs conversations, who follows up after an initial response, and which qualification criteria apply. Also agree what the sales team will receive: a contact list, an enquiry, a booked meeting or a held qualified meeting with notes. These outputs require different levels of work.

Which model might fit your business?

If you already have a well-managed sales team and need additional names or inbound responses, a narrowly scoped lead-generation service may be sufficient. If your processes are established but people capacity is limited, an outsourced SDR may suit you. If targeting, conversations, qualification and oversight lack a consistent owner, managed BDaaS may be worth exploring. The right choice depends on your offer, market and internal capabilities, not the label.

Agree the boundaries before starting

Define account fit, what counts as qualification, who owns follow-up, how meetings are handed over and how activity and outcomes will be reviewed. At Vazpio, the core managed BD responsibility ends at the qualified-meeting handoff. Your team handles product expertise, proposals, negotiations, contracts and closing. No vendor can guarantee how a particular market will respond; a focused pilot can test the approach before a longer commitment.
